The Casual Vacancy: Review?

The Casual Vacancy

The Casual Vacancy
Author: J.K. Rowling
Publisher: Little Brown and Company
Pages: 503

Summary:

A BIG NOVEL ABOUT A SMALL TOWN ...

When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils ... Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

My Thoughts:

Okay, I want to start off by saying that this isn't really going to be a "review" like I normally do. I expected so much out of this book because it was written by J.K. Rowling. I didn't even know what it was about or read any reviews before I bought the book because I figured it would be great. I was sadly disappointed. I was bored stiff while reading this book and there were SO many characters to keep track of. This doesn't happen often to me but I stopped reading at page 120. I have read a few reviews on it since then and I don't seem to be the only one who didn't like it but I suppose it just wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't know if I should even write a review on it since I didn't finish it but I wanted to let all of you know my honest thoughts on it so you can check into it more before you spend your money on it. Maybe my opinion would have changed if I would have stuck with it, maybe not. To sum it all up, I wasn't a fan and just wanted to let you guys know in case you had it on your TBR list or were thinking about purchasing it. Some may love it but I just couldn't, as badly as I wanted to. So if you're not sure whether you would like this book or not, I would suggest borrowing it from a friend or seeing if it is available at your library.

Have any of you read this book?

  2. You got twenty pages further than I did. These profoundly unpleasant, small minded people, not a sympathetic player in the bunch... I usually try to get through a book, but this one just drained the energy out of me.

And I loved her earlier work, so this makes it all the more disappointing.
